Red Card: Fellaini 84’

Marouane Felliani’s red card cost Jose Mourinho’s any chance of three points as Manchester City dominated but failed to break a resilient Manchester United defence.

Both entered the match desperate to gain a foot into a Champions League qualification spot for.

Within the first ten minutes Kun Aguero came closest as Kevin De Bruyne fired a cross in but the Argentine hit the post.

The game continued to be a cat and mouse approach as City had possession and United defended stoutly.

United did have chances, a deflected Anthony Martial cross was parried by Bravo straight to Henrik Mkhitaryan, but the City goalkeeper was thankful he fired back at him.

From the half-hour mark City continued the pressure as Aguero, Alekandar Kolorov and Raheem Sterling all created space with clever movement but all shot from range to the relief of Mourinho.

The last chance of the half fell to Herrera from a Marcus Rashford free-kick but the Spaniard headed wide.

The second-half continued but United’s attacking threat was obsolete after Fellaini fouled Aguero twice and the Belgium headbutted the approaching Argentine and received a red card.

City thought they had breached United’s defense as substitute Gabriel Jesus scored a minute into the six of added time with a diving header, but had done so from an offside position.

In United’s point-of-view it was an improvement from the first-half at Old Trafford and meant they matched a record 24 games unbeaten. For City the lack of penetration even after the red card would have disappointed Pep Guardiola.
